Protection Relay Monitoring System Testing

Protection Relay Testing and Commissioning

The testing and verification of protection devices and arrangements present several challenges. This is because the primary function of protection devices is to operate under fault conditions, making it impossible to test them under normal operating conditions. The problem is further exacerbated by the increasing complexity of protection arrangements, the use of protection relays with extensive software functionalities, and the frequent application of Ethernet peer-to-peer logic. The testing and verification of relay protection devices can be categorized into four groups:

  • Routine factory production tests
  • Type tests
  • Commissioning tests
  • Occasional maintenance tests
About us

Test Type

Type tests are essential to verify that a protection relay meets its specified requirements and adheres to all relevant standards. Given that the primary function of a protection relay is to operate correctly under abnormal power conditions, it is critical to evaluate its performance under such scenarios. Therefore, complex type tests simulating real working conditions are conducted at the manufacturer’s facilities during equipment development and certification. The primary standards governing relay performance are IEC 60255 and IEEE C37.90. Additionally, compliance may involve meeting the requirements of IEC 61000, 60068, and 60529, and products intended for installation in the EU must also comply with EU Directives. Because type testing of digital or numerical protection relays includes both software and hardware testing, the procedure is significantly more complex and challenging than for static or electromechanical relays.

Routine Factory Prouduction Tests

These tests are conducted to ensure that protection relays are free from defects during the manufacturing process. Testing is performed at various stages of production to identify problems as early as possible, thereby minimizing the need for remedial work. The scope of testing is influenced by the complexity of the relay and past manufacturing experience.

Commissioning Test

Commissioning tests are conducted to ensure that a specific protection configuration has been correctly implemented before it is put into operation. These tests comprehensively verify all aspects of the configuration, including the installation of the correct equipment, wiring verifications, and operation checks of individual equipment items, culminating in the testing of the complete configuration.

Periodic Maintenance Verification

These tests are necessary to identify equipment failures and service degradation, enabling corrective action to be taken. Since a protection configuration operates only under fault conditions, defects may go unnoticed for an extended period until a fault occurs. Regular testing helps to uncover faults that would otherwise remain undetected until such an event.

Comprehensive Relay Maintenance and Testing Solutions by ETC

Periodic maintenance and testing are crucial to ensure the continued satisfactory performance of your protection scheme long after installation. While microprocessor relays offer built-in self-testing features, these alone may not meet regulatory requirements or cover all components of the protection scheme. Regular inspection and testing of the protection scheme are therefore recommended.

At ETC, our experienced relay technicians recognize the critical nature of working with an active protection scheme and understand the impact that testing and maintenance have on critical system operation. Our technicians conduct testing based on maintenance recommendations from NETA, NERC, and NFPA, as well as specific customer requirements. Tests may include:

  • Visual and mechanical inspection
  • Insulation resistance measurements
  • Secondary injection tests
  • Verification of relay settings
  • Functional testing on wire connections, current and voltage transformers, and all auxiliary devices
  • Control verification
